Allie and I headed to Kohls in search of a 2009 picture ornament to put our family picture in. Of course, I waited until after Christmas and had not been able to find one anywhere. While browsing the clearance ornaments at Kohls, Allie came across a yellow lab dog ornament. It was actually pretty cute and she refused to put it down. Knowing it was 90% off, I figured it couldn't be too expensive so I gave in to buy it.
The entire way to the checkout, Allie was helping the dog "walk" on the tile and was barking. I was dying laughing as were the various customers that stopped to see what she was doing.
After nearly 10 minutes of walking to the register, we finally made it. They had to do a price check on the ornament since there was no tag. Allie used this opportunity to give her dog a ride around the store in a cart. She actually did pretty well pushing it on her own.
I was pretty proud of myself for not allowing my dislike of dogs to interfere with purchasing her something she really wanted. I can't say that the same would have happened if it were a real dog, but hey, baby steps, right?
We headed for the parking lot with Allie proudly carrying her new dog. We made it to the car and I lifted her up to put her in the car seat. Just as I did this, I heard glass breaking. I looked down to find that she had dropped her beloved dog and it had shattered into about 30 pieces. I quickly diverted her attention to a book we had in the car and she never asked for the dog again. It just solidified my decision that we are not cut out to be pet owners. If we couldn't care for and protect a dog ornament, how in the world would we protect a real dog? At least she got to enjoy the dog for almost half an hour.
